Q: What are ways new media platforms are used by traditional news media, advertising, public relations AND broadcasting professionals?


A: Traditional news media outlets such as The New York times have branched into new media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. However, the most interesting thing they are doing is the virtual reality using 360 cameras to tell their news stories. By simply downloading their app you can walk through the sights and scenes of global news.

Kim Kay from Nobox Creative uses all platforms of social media to advertise for her clients. She uses analytics to decide where her audience is best reached. She believes in quality over quantity. With her campaign for St. Andrew’s school she focused on their Facebook page and making it cater to multi-racial and middle income class students.

Dan Quandt is the Vice President of the Amarillo Convention and Visitor Council. He, in a sense, uses public relations messages to lure visitors to Amarillo. It is important to respond to those who engage in social media posts and to do it in a timely manner. Social media helps businesses relate to their customers and receive feedback on their products.

Broadcasting professionals, such as Brook Self from ABC 7, focuses on getting more viewers by engaging in social media. The people are on Facebook and Instagram and not necessarily watching the news on TV regularly.  If news stations go where the people are then they are likely to reach more viewers.  New Media tactics such as live video feeds encourage viewers to engage with the TV anchors and feel like they are behind the scenes of news production.



Q: What are some major new media concepts and terms?


A: Cyber bullying, big data, wearables, measurement, digital publishing and privacy are all major new media concepts that have come up with the rise of new media.

Cyber bullying is a major issue that many youth struggle with.  Any form of rude, degrading, stalking or harassment online falls under cyber bullying. We need to stand up and be heroes for those who fall victim to online bullies.

Big data is any large amount of data that needs organization and analysis in order for businesses to make the best decisions. Hootsuite is one way to organize and maintain control of the big data that social media sites bring in. Curating big data is another way to organize content in a meaningful way that may follow a theme.

Wearables are new technologies that enhance our lives while wearing them such as gloves that translate sign language, sports bras that monitor heart rate and Apple watches.

Measurement is another major concept each guest speaker covered and our case studies required us to find. Measuring social media use and the reactions is receives is important in confirming that you are heading up the right social media platform. Hootsuite is a great tool for analyzing this data and responding to followers. Analytics help admins to target their audience and use the best techniques for them.

Digital publishing involves trends of publishing content through digital platforms such as online magazines that are mobile friendly and blogging.

Privacy or lack thereof, is a major concern in today’s society. Erik Qualman covered many helpful tips to protect you in his book “What Happens on Campus Stays on YouTube”. The internet and new technologies have made it nearly impossible to maintain any sense of privacy. It is important to not only be aware of privacy settings online but to keep your social media presence respectable and clean. Employers see your personal life through social media.

  1. 360 Cameras
    • 360 cameras such as the 360 Fly and Ricoh Theta 360 cameras are devices that can capture an entire 360 degree angle in videos and pictures. This is possible through the use of fish eye lenses.
  2. Storify
    • Storify is a new tool I learned in this class that makes curating stories easy and simple. Storify allows you to drag in Tweets, links, pictures, video, GIFs and nearly any other form of media into a timeline to create a story. Follow this link for an example.
  3. WordPress
    • WordPress is a tool for digital publishing. In this site you create your own blog. Blogs are an important form of new media that allows writers to present an authentic viewpoint and receive feedback.
  4. LinkedIn
    • LinkedIn is a professional social media platform that allows users to network and connect with professionals and potential employers. It is important to have a complete profile when interacting on LinkedIn. This is a helpful tool for finding jobs and showcasing your skills and experiences.
  5. Virtual Reality
    • Virtual reality is a form of new media adopted by The New York Times. This allows readers to fully experience news stories with the help of 360 cameras and a virtual reality app on their phones. Viewers with Google Cardboard goggles can see these images in 3D and feel like they are in the story itself.



Q: How does new media impact our society?

A: New media is a part of everything we do every day. Everywhere we turn we see ads, our phones are constantly pouring messages into our heads, cameras and GPS devices track what we do, cookies on our devices track our shopping habits, social media builds our networks, and the way we receive news and information is always changing. New media impacts our society in allowing us to capture moments better with 360 cameras and drones. It allows us to connect with other professionals and old friends like never before. Our networks are bigger, more connected and better educated than ever before. As our society becomes more knowledgeable and close knit we also lose our privacy. There are pros and cons to new media but it is our job to utilize its benefits and protect ourselves from the harmful ways of cyber bullying and identity theft. We must promote new media literacy within society in order better utilize the benefits of new media’s impact.
